Touching the Heart?

2007 has seen more than its fair share of bad stories in the world of sports, but finally one comes that will touch the heart. Eli Florence is a sophomore at Lake Fenton High School in Michigan, he is dying of leukemia. Eli was nominated to be a part of his school's homecoming court, an honor normally reserved for seniors. He was nominated against four football players and a golfer, there was a very small chance he would be crowned king. But the seniors fixed the vote. Instead of letting the student body decide its homecoming king, the five seniors announced that Eli would be crowned. As unselfish as he was Eli didn't think he deserved to be king, even though he was the emotional and spiritual leader of that community. These five men gave up something that they all would have wanted to win to do the right thing.

Today there are too many selfish athletes who only think about themselves. They want more money, bigger endorsement deals and when they do something wrong it is never their fault it's someone else's. But the players of Lake Fenton High School saw an opportunity to give something to someone who had so little. Eli will always be remembered for his strength and his courage in his battles, while the players will be remembered for their generosity and their ability to do the right thing.

Do you think it's alright that America tends to fall in love with these types of stories and plays them out to much? Do you think that when something like this occurs, the indvidual with the diesase tend to be exploited a bit? Is this a situation that is good or bad for sports? Do you know of any other storlies like this that oyu would like to share, either from your own personal expierence or something that you may have heard about?
